Weight loss medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro are meant to be used alongside healthy lifestyle changes. So, you might be wondering: would it help to take supplements as well?

There’s no rule against taking supplements while you’re on Mounjaro. But here’s what you should bear in mind.

Do I need to take supplements with Mounjaro?

You don’t necessarily need to take any supplements with Mounjaro injections.

Yet in certain cases, you might take them to support your general health. For example, if you had a nutritional deficiency.

It’s possible that some supplements might help with side effects of the medicine, though there’s limited evidence on this. It’s always best to check in with your provider about side effect relief.

Popular supplements Mounjaro users recommend

Some people report that supplements ease their Mounjaro side effects. If something is safe and it works for you, that’s great! But remember: personal experiences are not clinical evidence.

Here’s what people are saying on forums like Reddit about taking supplements while on Mounjaro:

  • Fibre and magnesium for side effects like constipation
  • Protein shakes to help meet the macronutrient requirements of their Mounjaro diet
  • Collagen to prevent hair loss

These tips are based on personal experiences, not scientific evidence—so take them with a grain of salt. Your clinician is the best person to advise you on whether any supplements are necessary or safe for you while taking Mounjaro.

What supplements to take with Mounjaro

These supplements may be worth exploring for help with side effects and supporting general health.

FYI: different weight loss injections can cause similar symptoms, so these might help with Wegovy side effects, too.

Electrolytes

Mounjaro can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and if you don’t replace the fluids lost you can get dehydrated—making you dizzy and tired, among other things. Taking in minerals called electrolytes can help you rehydrate (these are sometimes called oral rehydration solutions).

Vitamin B12

One way Mounjaro makes you feel full is by slowing your digestion. But that may also prevent tablets, like vitamin B12, from being properly absorbed by your body. Being low on B12 can cause fatigue, brain fog, and more. So, you might benefit from topping up your levels.

If you think you might have a deficiency, see your GP who will likely arrange a blood test.

Iron

Iron tablets may help with low energy, particularly if you have an iron deficiency. Check with your clinician first.

Protein

Protein is essential for building and maintaining muscle—and it helps keep you full. Some people drink protein shakes to help them hit their macro targets.

Weight loss, whether through diet and exercise alone or using medications like Mounjaro, can lead to some muscle loss too. So it’s a good idea to increase your protein intake to help maintain your muscle mass.

Collagen or biotin

These might help with hair loss (the evidence is a bit of a mixed bag), which can be a temporary side effect of weight loss.

Fibre

Fibre supplements may help with constipation.

What vitamins should not be taken with Mounjaro

There are certain medicines you shouldn’t take with Mounjaro. However, Mounjaro isn’t known to interact directly with any vitamins or common supplements.

Though as we mentioned above, it can affect how well vitamin tablets are absorbed. So if you are wanting to top up your levels, be careful that you don’t take too much. If levels of certain vitamins (like A,E,D,C, and some B vitamins) are too high, it can cause side effects.

Try to avoid taking different multivitamins at the same time, to ensure you aren’t overdoing it with any one vitamin. Taking too much iron can also upset your gut, for instance.

If you’re taking a supplement called berberine, which some women take for PCOS, be careful. Both substances can lower blood sugar levels—potentially too much when combined. There is a risk of hypoglycaemia if you’re not eating enough.

Be aware of the signs of low blood sugar (such as dizziness, tiredness and confusion) and get in touch with your provider if you have any of the symptoms. The same could be true for other supplements that can lower blood sugar such as ginseng.

We know we sound like a broken record here, but always check in with your provider about which supplements are best for you personally. In any case, it’s best to get your nutrients from your diet rather than supplements.
