From what to bring to the airport to keeping your medicine at the right temperature, here’s what you need to know about travelling with Mounjaro.
Mounjaro travel checklist
Getting ready to travel with Mounjaro? Here’s what you’ll need to have with you.
- Carry-on bag. It’s important you keep your medication in your carry-on luggage, as the checked luggage compartment can get really cold. If your pen freezes, you can’t use it.
- Your prescription/doctor’s note. You may need to declare your medication at the airport. Ask your provider and check the rules of your destination country. Have your prescription and a doctor’s note handy to prove the medicine is yours.
- Original packaging. Keep the pens in their original packaging and bring the leaflet that came with them, too.
- Cool bag. Mounjaro can be stored out of the fridge at temperatures up to 30°C for 30 days max. But you can keep it in the fridge (2-8°C) until it expires (30 days after first use). With a cool bag, you can control the temperature and keep your medication stored for longer.
Can I take Mounjaro on a plane?
So, can I fly with Mounjaro? In most cases, yes. Be sure to check the rules around bringing medication into the country you’re travelling to (more on this below).
When you go through airport security, keep your Mounjaro injections in their original packaging. This will help staff identify them quickly. It’s a good idea to check with the airline about their policies ahead of time, so you know what to expect.
How to pack and keep Mounjaro cool when travelling
If you've already taken your first dose from the pen, Mounjaro can be stored at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 30 days.
If you're going away or expecting hot weather, it might be worth speaking to your provider to see if you can take your next dose a day or two early. That way, you won’t need to travel with it in a cool bag—and can store your new pen at room temperature right away.
If you're staying somewhere hot and the room temperature is consistently above 30°C, you should store your pen in the fridge instead.
Documents you may need when travelling with Mounjaro
You’ll need your prescription and, to be safe, a doctor’s note, in case you have to prove the medicine is yours. But you might need extra documents depending on where you’re travelling to.
Different countries may have their own rules about bringing in certain medications. For instance, if you’re heading to China or Russia, you may need to get specific documentation and approval. Check in with the embassy of your destination country to be sure.
Do you need to declare Mounjaro on travel insurance?
Yep, you generally need to declare all medication that you’re taking when you sign up to travel insurance. You’ll also need to tell them about any health conditions you’re dealing with. Otherwise, it can be trickier for you to make a claim.
Do you need to bring your prescription to the airport?
Yes, we would definitely recommend that you do this! If you have to declare your medicine, you’ll need to have proof that it’s prescribed to you.
